Unbelievable start to 2010

8 05 2010

We went fishing, but the wind and weather were not cooperating.  So, we decided to fish with minnows off the front rocks.  Ended up hooking 16 fish in two hours … including a 10 lbs Pike, and two huge small mouth Bass (5 and 6 lbs).  Here are a few of the pictures …

Monster Pike on Opening Day -2009

1 05 2009

Last year, David Wiens caught his first Pike at Diamond Key.  So, we invited him back … apparently, he has been secretly practicising.  Quietly honing his skills.

Fish Master Contest Winner 2008 - Diamond Key Lodge

We have an annual Fish Master Contest.  The winner must catch the fish (of course), take a picture and release the fish (good Karma).

We have six loaner digital cameras, so if you forget your camera, we will lend you one … we also have a satellite and can upload to our digital photo gallery, before you even leave … http://www.diamondkeylodge.smugmug.com

2008 was an awesome year the decision was difficult.   But, this was a beauty!  Safely released for another day.

This is not the one that got away! This is the next day.

This is not the one that got away! This is the next day.

If you follow this link, you can see a great video of a lost Pike … the net was telescopic, so it flipped and the fish got away … oh well, they caught another huge one 15 minutes later (15 lbs) and then a 44 inch monster pike the next day.

I thought he was going to cry.

Pike Fishing Season on the Georgian Bay

Monster Pike caught on the Georgian Bay - Diamond Key Lodge

Monster Pike caught on the Georgian Bay - Diamond Key Lodge

In our part of the Georgian Bay, the Northern Pike season starts on the 1st of May.  At this time of year, almost any fishing technique will work.  You can troll along weed-beds or shoals or go in and cast just off shore.  The fish are very aggressive.   We fish where the Key, Pickerel and French Rivers join to the Georgian Bay.  The area is very productive because we are relatively remote and there is not a lot of fishng pressure.  Also, the area is huge and there is a large supply of bait fish.
